Equal Opportunities

by Leanna 5. March 2010 13:45
Reviewing our equal opportunities calendar we have started to celebrate all of our recorded celebrations we may not have celebrated previously. For example: - Birthday of Queen Elizabeth II - Whit Sunday - Pentecost Sunday - The Queens official birthday - Dassera - Passover - Divali - Eid - Raksha Bandham - Mandy Thursday - Lent - St. Georges Day - Hanukkah - St. Andrews Day - Day of Atonement - Black History Month - Asian Arts week - St. Swithins Day - Navarithri beginning. If you have a particular festival or celebration you carry out at home please inform us so we can join in your celebration. We have also discussed as a team reviewing our visits to other places out of nursery. One of our targets is to take a trip out of the nursery as often as possible, linking this in with our festivals and celebrations. I am looking for your feedback and opinions on visiting religious sights e.g.: churches, cathedrals and mosques. We are also looking into having more visitors coming into the nursery, we have previously had a visit from a dentist and children really seem to listen and interact well. Feel free to put ideas forward and opinions are more than welcome. Leanna

Hi Leanna,

I think these field trips or visitors coming to nursery can only be a good thing. I really liked it when the children met the Police, maybe you could look at getting the local Fire Engine to come and visit too?
All of these activities help develop the childrens understanding of things we as adults may take for granted.

Visits and visitors are definitely something I would support more of!

Thanks
Natasha

Hi Leanna

I agree that the field trips are stimulating for the children and help them to make sense of the world around them.
I also think visitors are a good thing - what about getting parents involved and getting them to come into the nursery if they have a job that would be good for the children to hear about?

Thanks for the comments, yes I can only agree. If we can get people to come into the nursery that's great but even better if there are parents as it is about making it relevant to the children and celebrating all that we do.  Are you offering Elizabeth here, 'cause we'll snap you up on this if you are (no pressure!) and maybe other people will follow?
